Neil Patel's team analyzed 68,000 AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude to see which fintech brands show up when people ask questions like 'what's the best budget tracking app' or 'how do I send money to friends.' The short version: nobody has this figured out. Apple tops the visibility index at 65.6 out of 100, SoFi leads pure fintech players at 64.6, and not a single brand among the 7,000 studied broke 66. That ceiling matters. It tells you AI search visibility in fintech is still wide open, and the brands that move now will own category answers the way early SEO winners owned Google results for a decade.
If you run a small business with any digital presence, this is your early-warning signal. Your customers are already asking AI tools for recommendations in your category, whether you sell software, services, or local retail. The study found that category leaders dominate: Klarna appears in 91.8% of buy-now-pay-later answers, and no lending brand cleared 43.7% category saturation. Meanwhile, brands outside the top three in any category were functionally invisible. That winner-take-most dynamic should unsettle anyone assuming AI search will be more forgiving than traditional search. It won't be. It will be more concentrated.
The most useful insight here is that raw mention volume doesn't equal visibility. PayPal was mentioned 14,294 times, the highest count in the dataset, but ranked third overall because competitors were named first. Position within the answer matters more than frequency. We find this credible and under-reported. Most coverage of AI search treats it as a volume game, but the ordering inside a response is where persuasion happens. If an AI tool names two competitors before you, you're the third option in a list most people won't scroll past.
There's also a contested implication worth flagging. Patel frames third-party coverage from comparison sites and financial media as a visibility lever, which is convenient for a content marketing agency selling exactly that service. The data shows correlation, not causation. Still, the underlying logic holds: AI models pull from sources they trust, and established editorial coverage signals trust. Reddit, notably, gets cited far more in ChatGPT than in Perplexity or Claude, meaning each platform has its own citation diet. A PR strategy built for one platform may do nothing on another.
The practical takeaway for operators: audit what AI tools say about your category right now. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude the questions your customers would ask. Note which competitors appear, in what order, and what sources get cited. Then build content and third-party coverage aimed at the specific platforms where you're absent. The window where 66 out of 100 is the best score in the industry will not stay open long.
Watch for two things next. First, whether Google Gemini's integration into search results changes the citation patterns Patel measured, since Gemini pulls from a different source pool than any of the three platforms studied. Second, whether fintech brands start optimizing specifically for AI answer structure the way they once optimized for featured snippets. The operators who treat AI visibility as a measurable channel with its own playbook, rather than a novelty, will be the ones sitting in those answers when the other 6,990 brands in the study finally wake up.
Takeaway: Ask AI tools the questions your customers ask, note which competitors appear first, and build third-party coverage aimed at each platform's citation sources before category leaders lock in.

Key Findings
Note: Note: Our AI Visibility Score is a 100-point measure combining how often a brand appears in AI answers, how early it’s mentioned, and how many categories it shows up in.
Apple ranks #1 for AI visibility with a score of 65.6/100, boosted by Apple Pay’s saturation in AI answers and established product presence.
AI platforms don’t share the same information sources. Reddit, for example, is mentioned in ChatGPT answers more often than of Perplexity and Claude answers.
Among 7k brands studied, none cleared a score of 66. In contrast, by category, brands like Klarna own answers for BNPL (shows up in 92% of answers), suggesting more strategic focus on building category saturation versus broader presence.
SoFi leads pure fintech brands for AI visibility, scoring 64.6/100.
